
Minutes of Maryland/DC Damage Prevention Meeting
April 28, 2009

I. Call To Order and Introduction:
Wayne Gilmer (Utiliquest) called the regular monthly meeting to order at 9:35 am.
Introductions were made.
The minutes of March 24, 2009 were approved with additional comments provided by Dennis Lescalleet (Pleasants Construction). He reiterated his
concerns from the previous meeting about Ticket Check status codes being different on multiple occasions for the same jobsite. Joe Feronti
(Utiliquest) invited Dennis to his office to address his concerns. A few suggested a jobsite visit in addition to the office visit. An update
on this issue would be provided to the group at the next meeting.
II. Safety Item:
Wayne Gilmer’s monthly safety topic covered “Personal commitment to safety: Are you committed to safety 100% of the time?”
III. Dig Smart/Locator Achievement Awards:
There was a general discussion and positive feedback about the Awards night. Mark Hamrick (Verizon) thanked Dora Parks (Miss Utility) and Nick
Kelly (MGH) for the work they put into making the room at Kahler Hall look just as nice as the one at the Columbia Sheraton.
A wrap up meeting was scheduled for May 1, 2009.
IV. Public Awareness Update:
Chris McMurry (MGH) gave a lengthy overview of the 2009 spring campaign:
- MGH was able to secure value added radio spots due to the soft radio market and their long standing relationships with the media
outlets.
- Miss Utility is partnering with 98 Rock and Brothers Services on a front yard makeover promotion. Chris showed one of the video entries
from 98 Rock’s website.
- BGE recently partnered with Channel 11 during a home gardening segment that feature weatherman John Collins (Channel 11), Linda Foy (BGE) and Carrie Engels of Valley View Farms in which Miss Utility, 811 and safe digging were the primary focus. Chris showed
everyone the segment
- Frederick Keys/Miss Utility Diamond Dig event will be held June 14th with more details being provided at the next meeting.
V. Damage Prevention Presentations:
Wayne Gilmer gave a brief update on the following damage prevention presentations:
- Alleghany County Government on March 25, 2009 in Cumberland, MD conducted by Wayne Gilmer and Matt Ruddo
- Madasco on March 26, 2009 in Jessup, MD conducted by Wayne Gilmer, Tom Baldwin (BGE), Chuck Baker (Verizon) and Matt Ruddo
- Chapel Valley Landscaping on March 31, 2009 in Woodbine, MD conducted by Wayne Gilmer, Tom Baldwin and Matt Ruddo
- DCWASA-Blue Plains Treatment Facility on April 24, 2009 in SW DC conducted by Wayne Gilmer, Scott Lubey (Verizon), Greg Johnson and
Jack Sullivan (BGE). Robert Wells (DCWASA) thanked those who attended and said that it was the best DCWASA quarterly meeting they
have in the past several years.
Wayne Gilmer referenced the following upcoming damage prevention presentations:
- Fort Detrick Safety Awareness Day at 832 Gardner Street in Frederick, MD on May 7, 2009
- Home Builders Association of Maryland- Land Development Council- at 7127 Ambassador Drive in Woodlawn, MD on May 7, 2009
VI. 2009 Greater Chesapeake Damage Prevention Training Conference (GCDPTC):
Matt Ruddo and Chris McMurry gave an update on the GCDPTC that will be held at the Clarion Fontainebleau Hotel on October 21-23, 2009. They both

VII. VI. Trade Shows & Safety Events:
Wayne Gilmer stated that Miss Utility was given a free booth space at the spring Harford Live Home Show this past weekend. A few commented that it
was well attended and should be considered as a possibility for 2010.

VIII. Title XII Steering Committee:
Tom Baldwin stated the steering committee began their review of the enforcement model and would be putting together legal language. He also stated
that the Law changes have been completed and will be review by all stakeholder groups once the enforcement model is done.
There was a general discussion about stakeholders having the summer time to review the changes and a meeting would be schedule sometime in the lat
summer or early fall of 2009.
IX. MD/DC Subscribers Committee Meeting:
No report. Next meeting is scheduled for June 3, 2009 at 9:00 am in the Call Center conference room.
XI. FTTP/FIOS Progress Report:

Sam LaQuey (Verizon) stated that the current Verizon damage ratio is 0.15 damages per 10,000 trench feet. He also stated that CableCom has
installed 100,000 trench feet without a single damage.

There were additional discussions and concerns raised by Dennis Lescalleet. In the interest of time, Dennis was asked to talk to the parties in
question offline and report back to the group next month.
